The Monarch Of Luxembourg Has Abdicated.

Power passed to a successor.

Crown Grand Duke Guillaume was sworn in as Luxembourg's new head of state on Friday morning, taking the constitutional oath in front of the country's parliament, RTL reported.

The historic ceremony took place in the Chamber of Deputies at 11 a.m., less than an hour after Guillaume's father Grand Duke Henri abdicated after 25 years of rule.

43-year-old Guillaume became Luxembourg's new sovereign and the tenth monarch to bear the title of grand duke. He took the constitutional oath before parliament, promising to abide by the laws of the state and serve its people.

The solemn event was attended by members of the government, parliamentarians and distinguished guests. The event marked a smooth transition of power in Europe's only grand duchy.

Guillaume succeeded his father Henri, who abdicated Friday morning during a ceremony at the Grand Ducal Palace. During his reign, Henri became known as a unifying figure, presiding over a period of political stability, economic growth and a deepening of Luxembourg's role in international affairs.

With Guillaume, the new Grand Duchess of Luxembourg is his wife Stephanie, whom he married in 2012. The couple have two sons, Prince Charles, born in 2020, and Prince François, born in 2023, ensuring the continuation of the Grand Ducal dynasty.

The ascension of Grand Duke Guillaume is widely perceived as a moment of continuity and renewal for Luxembourg at the same time.
