The US President declared a state of "armed conflict" with the cartels and authorized military strikes.
US President Donald Trump has effectively declared war on drug cartels in the Caribbean region: the government says the United States is now in a state of "armed conflict" with the cartels, reports BILD.
This wording has serious meaning. The fact is that the U.S. war against the terrorist group ISIL fell into the same category. This means that Trump has de facto legalized large-scale military strikes against the cartels: the US now has the right to kill opponents even if they do not pose an immediate threat, as well as imprison them indefinitely without trial.
Till now, drug smugglers were considered criminals - with the right to a fair trial.
Trump justifies the tougher measures by "protecting Americans." But legal experts doubt the legality of the decision: to do so, as retired military judge Jeffrey S. Korn, there must be an armed attack by the cartels. The sale of dangerous drugs is not one, he opined. Korn accuses Trump of abusing the right: "This is not border defense. This is the destruction of those borders."
