A blockade is being prepared.
The European Union is preparing legal grounds for stopping tankers of Russia's "shadow fleet" in the Baltic Sea.
The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak said this in Telegram.
"Our last year's sanctions proposals may be transformed into a decision," Yermak said.
According to EUObserver, we are talking about at least 16 flagless vessels that could be detained under Article 110 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
In the new, 19th package of sanctions, the EU plans to add another 120 oil tankers from Russia's shadow fleet, increasing its blacklist to 568 vessels. Some of them formally no longer call at EU ports, but continue to use the Baltic Sea for transportation.
"Using the mechanism of international law and the readiness of NATO countries to enforce it is a key signal to the Kremlin: its attempts to circumvent sanctions are not working," the OP leader stressed.
Ermak emphasized that it is necessary to limit Russia's capabilities faster. According to him, Moscow is already waging a hybrid war against Europe, and here the issue of speed plays a significant role.
