Atlantic Council: It's Time To Speak The Language Of Force With Putin

The Kremlin rejected Trump's 'generous deal'.

The US has seen a marked change of tone in its relations with Russia. Donald Trump has called the Kremlin a "paper tiger," showing impatience with Moscow's stalling of peace talks. To get Putin to compromise, Trump will have to back up his rhetoric with concrete actions, the think tank Atlantic Council writes.

Despite the ambiguity of his approach, Trump has had some successes: he has gotten European allies to take security more seriously and more actively support Ukraine. U.S. arms sales to Kiev have been arranged through Europe, which could become a long-term mechanism for stable supplies.

At the same time, efforts to normalize relations with Russia have had little effect. Moscow has only cautiously expressed support for peace initiatives while escalating the invasion and attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure. Putin is ignoring calls for peace and trying to buy time.

The United States is now signaling a willingness to act more forcefully: this includes expanded intelligence sharing with Ukraine and potential deliveries of Tomahawk missiles. Trump may also provide Ukraine with long-term security guarantees and increase economic pressure on Russia's allies that help circumvent Western sanctions. Analysts state:

"There are now signs that Putin's reluctance to compromise has finally forced Trump to compromise."

Experts say the success of the talks depends on whether Trump convinces Moscow of his willingness to ensure Ukraine's long-term survival. For now, Russia is hoping for Western fatigue, but decisive U.S. action could change the balance and force Putin to seriously come to the negotiating table.

Analysts summarized:

"For more than six months, Trump has tried to lure Russia to the negotiating table by offering favorable peace terms and attractive opportunities for cooperation. So far he has received only empty promises and deadly escalation. It's time to talk to Putin in the language of force, the only language he truly understands and respects."
