Russia doesn't have any extra money.
It used to be that the unique Belarusian model had little to be happy about. Cheap oil, cheap gas and a few credits, writes planbmedia.io.
But the years go by, the model is not getting younger. So she needs more and more to thrive. It turns out that during his visit to Moscow, Lukashenko asked Putin not only for a loan for a second nuclear power plant. He also asked to protect the Russian market from duplicating Russian production facilities. Because otherwise Belarusian goods would not sell well. In general, a clear and simple scheme. However, it is not very clear why Russia should organize this ride of unheard-of generosity.
Putin, there is a question
Lukashenko himself said a week ago after his meeting with Putin about cheap oil, gas and a loan for the second nuclear power plant. He explained that he had already agreed on almost everything. There are literally nothing left to do. To choose a site for the second nuclear power plant, and for the governments to finally agree on the final terms.
But cheap oil, gas, and loans were enough for the unique Belarusian model to thrive before. When the grass was greener and the unique model was healthier. But the years go by. The model is not getting younger. So now it needs a little more for full happiness.
"Our president has outlined to the leader of Russia the problem of unfair competition... because there are dumping supplies, there are duplicate production," said the head of Lukashenko's administration Dmitry Krutoy.
That is, now it's not enough for Russia to protect its market for Belarusian goods from foreign competition. Because everything was clear with foreign competition before. Unscrupulous foreign competitors have been forcing Belarusian goods out of the Russian market with low prices and high quality for a year now. Simply put, by completely unfair methods.
But it turns out that they are not the only ones. Russian producers are no better. Because what is redundant duplicating production? It's when MAZ can't sell its trucks in Russia because Russia has KAMAZ. And why doesn't Gomselmash exports work out? Because it is hindered by the Russian Rostselmash. And of course, something must be done about it. That is, to protect the Russian market for Belarusian goods from unfair competition on the part of Russian producers.
In short, why do you need these duplicate production facilities when you have unique Belarusian quality? After all, Belarusian quality is better than duplicate production facilities.
What will you pay?
Putin delicately kept silent about the increased obligations. He said nothing about oil, gas or credit. Not to mention the protection of the Russian market for Belarusian goods from the competition of Russian producers.
And humanly speaking, he can be understood. Russia has a place to spend extra money. Russia has no extra money. It does not even have enough money for the war. And it makes no practical sense to spend this money on Lukashenko. Because Lukashenko will not go anywhere from Russia anyway. And if there is no difference, why pay more?
Unless in exchange for additional services. Lukashenko paid for the current Russian generosity by complicity in the war with Ukraine. And to get more, he will have to participate in something else. Either in the war with Ukraine or in provocations against the Western neighbors.
Russian generosity has already cost Belarus too much. It is not a fact that the Belarusian authorities will be able to pay the new bills. And, most likely, the Belarusian authorities realize it. Therefore, since there is nowhere to go anyway, they are trying to squeeze the maximum out of their ally. Not only credits for NPPs, but also protection of the Russian market from Russian goods.
