There Was An Assassination Attempt On A Town Mayor In Germany

Iris Stalzer was stabbed several times - doctors are fighting for her life.

In the German town of Herdecke, North Rhine-Westphalia, the town's recently elected mayor - 57-year-old SPD representative Iris Stalzer - was severely stabbed in the stomach and back, BILD reports.

BILD reports that the wounded Stalzer was found in her apartment by her son. Before losing consciousness, the mayor managed to say she was attacked by several men on the street. Doctors are fighting for her life, the woman's condition is assessed as critical.

Police have announced an interception plan and are searching for the attackers. The agency has not ruled out any version, including a political motive. The investigation has been handed over to the Major Crimes Investigation Team.

Iris Stalzer was elected mayor of Herdecke in the second round of municipal elections on September 28. The attack took place just ten days after her victory.
