French National Assembly To Consider Proposal To Remove Macron From Power

104 parliamentarians have already signed a resolution for his resignation.

The bureau of France's National Assembly (lower house of parliament) will consider a motion to launch a procedure to remove President Emmanuel Macron from power, Matilde Panot, leader of the Unruly France party Matilde Panot said on social media X.

"104 parliamentarians have already signed a resolution for his resignation. A new vote will take place tomorrow in the National Assembly," Panot said

The leader of the "Unconquered" party, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, also called for the impeachment motion to be considered immediately.

The National Assembly has 577 deputies. In mid-September, Panot reported that more than 100 of them had signed a project to impeach Macron. It is up to the National Assembly bureau, the chamber's highest collegial body, to decide whether to consider the deputies' proposals.

On Sept. 8, the cabinet of Francois Bayrou resigned. The prime minister himself had initiated a vote of confidence in parliament to win support for his program of spending cuts and budget deficits. He ultimately failed the vote.

The next day Macron nominated Sebastien Lecornu, who has been defense minister since 2022, as the new prime minister.

On October 6, Lecornu resigned - he had been prime minister for 27 days - hours after announcing the composition of the new government, which was denounced by both Macron supporters and the opposition.

That day, former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said he favored holding early presidential elections after France adopts a budget: in this regard, he said, "Macron should show some initiative."
