Berlin assessed their actions.
Three members of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AdG) party attended a closed birthday party for Vladimir Putin held at the Russian embassy in Berlin.
According to MDR, the event was organized by the pro-Russian far-right magazine Compact, which has previously been banned for distributing anti-constitutional material. During the event, the publication's editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsesser called Putin a "statesman and patriot" who allegedly "defends Western values against the leftist West" and wished the dictator a "long life."
The journalists spotted AdG deputies Hans-Thomas Tilschneider, Florian Schroeder and Frank Otto Lizurek among the guests. In particular, Tilschneider is already known for his pro-Russian statements and scandalous visit to occupied eastern Ukraine in 2022.
The co-chairman of the AdG faction in Saxony-Anhalt, Oliver Kirchner, confirmed that he was aware of his colleagues' participation, although he was not invited to the event himself. He said deputies should "communicate with all sides."
Political opponents viewed the act as further evidence of the AdG's pro-Russian sympathies. CDU faction leader Guido Hoyer said the Alternative for Germany part had "lost contact with the foundations of free democracy." Liberal spokesman from the FDP Andreas Silbersak called on the party to decide "who they will go to bed with - Putin or Trump."
