What should happen in the next few days?
Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of a peace plan for the Gaza Strip: a ceasefire agreement has been reached. The first phase includes the release of hostages and Israel's partial withdrawal from Gaza.
The breakthrough in the settlement of hostilities between Israel and Hamas militants comes two years after Hamas launched an attack that almost completely destroyed Gaza. This is according to Axios.
After Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had signed an agreement, a U.S. official told the media that the war in Gaza was "over" and confirmed that the release of hostages should take place soon.
"The war in Gaza is over. The hostages will be released 72 hours after the Israeli government approves the agreement," the official said.
He said the hostages' release is expected by Monday, October 13.
The publication noted that 20 of the 48 Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas are believed to still be alive. Israel in return has expressed a willingness to release 250 Palestinians serving life sentences in the country's prisons, as well as 1,700 Palestinians detained by Israeli security forces since October 7, 2023.
It is also expected that Donald Trump may visit the region soon. This could happen as early as this weekend, the publication informs, citing a statement by White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt.
Israeli authorities announced that the country's government is to meet the next day in order to "approve the agreement." The announcement was made by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Al Jazeera reported.
But the Hamas-controlled Gaza government information office urged residents to remain cautious and refrain from traveling, Reuters reported. People are urged to wait for a statement from official Palestinian authorities to confirm the ceasefire.
