Hundreds Of Towns Will Disappear In Russia

Because of the mass exodus of population.

Hundreds of small towns in Russia may disappear in the near future due to the mass outflow of population. Such a conclusion is contained in the VCIOM report, which was familiarized by TASS. According to the researchers, young people are leaving small towns in search of better career and educational prospects, while the older generation is gradually dwindling away. At the same time, new residents practically do not come to small towns. This leads to a reduction in the number of households and a general decline in population, writes The Moscow Times.

The report says that the reason for the exodus is not only earnings, but also limited infrastructure and lack of attractive prospects for life and development. Thus, according to the survey, in small towns only 33% of people aged 18-24 are optimistic about the future, while in cities with a million inhabitants this figure reaches 53%. At the same time, the researchers noted that between 1950 and 2030, the population outside cities in Russia will decrease by 36%, while the population in cities with a population of half a million or more will grow by 25%.

There are only 1,120 cities in Russia. More than 70% of them are small towns, i.e. cities with a population of less than 50 thousand people. To date, 3.4 million people live in such settlements. Over the past ten years, their number has decreased by 314.5 thousand, analysts of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration calculated. According to the researchers' assessment, 129 small towns may disappear in Russia in the foreseeable future. The risk zone includes northern coal mining, metallurgical and timber-industrial settlements, such as Porkhov in the Pskov Oblast, Zavolzhye in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Nolinsk in the Kirov Oblast, as well as many towns in the Bryansk, Novgorod Oblasts and Krasnodar Krai.
