Talks continue between Washington and Ankara.
The United States demands that Turkey give up Russian S-400 air defense systems if Ankara wants to return to the F-35 fighter jet production and procurement program.
The U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said this, according to Bloomberg.
According to him, negotiations are ongoing between Washington and Ankara over the Russian systems, which Turkey purchased nearly a decade ago. At the same time, Turkey expresses a "desire to rejoin" the F-35 program, from which it was excluded after purchasing the S-400.
Barrack stressed that the position of the US and NATO allies remains unchanged - Ankara cannot operate or own the S-400 if it wants to return to the F-35 program.
"As stated in US legislation, Turkey no longer has to operate or own the S-400 system in order to return to the F-35 program," the ambassador stressed.
He noted that personal contacts between US President Donald Trump and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan have allowed for "the most fruitful talks in decades" on the topic.
"We hope that these talks will lead to a breakthrough in the coming months that will meet the security requirements of both the United States and Turkey," the ambassador said.
He had previously said Turkey was "getting closer to getting rid of the S-400" and the issue could theoretically be resolved within four to six months.
Turkey, on the other hand, expects that the United States can lift sanctions against its defense industry without requiring it to give up Russian missiles.
Reminder that Ankara bought the S-400 systems after the 2016 coup attempt, when putschists used US F-16 fighter jets to strike parliament and the vicinity of the presidential palace.
