Finland Prepared To Jam Russian Drones

The country has purchased hundreds of UAV suppression systems and detectors.

Finland has purchased hundreds of drone detection and jamming tools amid a growing threat from Russia. In particular, the Finnish military has bought SkyWiper Omni Max drone jamming devices made by Lithuanian company NT Service, Colonel Mano-Makael Nokelainen, who oversees air defense, told Reuters. They are creating a protective dome of hundreds of meters to block the drones' control, video and navigation signals. They are planned to be deployed near critical infrastructure as well as on military bases.

In addition, the military received portable drone detectors Airfence from Finnish company Sensofusion and additional sights for Smash rifles from Israeli company Smartshooter. The latter make it easier to aim firearms at drones and destroy them in the air. Nokelainen noted that the new equipment is designed to counter small reconnaissance drones. At the same time, how Finland is going to fight larger drones, the military did not specify. According to Reuters, Finland has about a thousand reconnaissance FPV drones. Some of them are made in the U.S. and some are manufactured by Finnish Insta for training purposes. Lieutenant General Pasi Valimaki, the army commander, said the armed forces plan to order more drones of different sizes and types, as well as anti-drone equipment next year.

But Valimaki said there was no point in stockpiling too many devices that could become obsolete due to rapid technological development in the field. "We should optimize the number of purchases, that is, their volume, according to our training objectives. Then we must create production capacity in case of crisis situations," the lieutenant general explained. He also added that the military expects to train about 500 new drone operators every year.

In the past fall, dozens of incidents with unknown drones were recorded in Europe, appearing in airport areas in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Poland and Romania, as well as near NATO military bases. In Finland, drones were spotted in late September near the Valajaskoski power plant in the city of Rovaniemi.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky claimed that Russia was behind the provocations, using "shadow fleet" tankers, among others, to launch drones. In this regard, he called on Western countries to close the Baltic Sea and other seas to Russian tankers and "painfully" hit them with sanctions.
