White House expands anti-drug campaign.
U.S. President Donald Trump has made a harsh statement regarding Colombian President Gustavo Petro, effectively threatening him as part of his regional campaign against drug trafficking. While speaking to reporters, Trump said that Petro could be the "next" target of pressure from Washington, writes Politico.
At first, he brushed off the question, saying he "didn't think much" about Petro. But after a few seconds, he moved on to a direct threat:
"Colombia produces a lot of drugs. So he better wise up or he'll be next. He'll be next soon. I hope he's listening, he'll be next."
Part of a broader U.S. operation
Trump's statements were the sharpest escalation yet of his threats to Colombia's leader. In an interview with Politico earlier this week, the US president outlined plans to expand the military operation against the drug trade from Venezuela to Mexico and Colombia.
Since September, the U.S. has already carried out a series of strikes against suspected drug ships in the Caribbean and the Pacific, and has increased its military presence off the Venezuelan coast to pressure Nicolas Maduro.
Relations with Bogota
Tensions between Washington and Bogota rose in the fall. The Trump administration
revoked Colombia's status as a partner in drug control,
canceled Petro's visa,
reduced financial aid,
described Colombia's president as an "illegal drug trafficker."
The U.S. has made no secret of the fact that it would like to see Petro resign. However, this could happen without American intervention: the Colombian leader's term is ending and the country is preparing for presidential elections in May.
The Colombian Embassy has not yet commented on Trump's statements.
