Media: In Novorossiysk, Not Only "Varshavyanka" But Also Other Submarines Were Hit

A powerful explosion damaged hydroelectric equipment.

The defeat of the Russian Varshavyanka-class submarine in Novorossiysk by Ukrainian Sub Sea Baby drones was "non-ideal" - the drones hit a pier instead of the boat itself. Nevertheless, the submarine "can definitely be scrapped," and what's more, there are other bonuses from such a hit.

For example, hitting other boats that were nearby. And this is not the only point to pay attention to, said on air OBOZ.UA expert, editor-in-chief of Defense Express Oleg Katkov.

Critical Damage

The fact that the Sub Sea Baby hit the pier near the Varshavyanka is confirmed by satellite images (below) that were taken the next day, December 16. But the same photos confirm the validity of the Ukrainian Security Service's claim that the submarine "received critical damage."

"The Sub Sea Baby missed a little bit, you have to admit that the hit was not perfect. It crashed and exploded into the pier. But the satellite image clearly shows the aftermath of that explosion. There's a crater in the solid concrete pier about nine meters in diameter. That is a direct indication of how powerful the warhead was there, because such a crater is a lot," the expert noted.

He emphasized that because of the damage the Russian boat definitely "can be scrapped for scrap metal."

"There are two internal compartments flooded. There is critical real damage there, it is without any options, no other way. Even if there was a tank standing there, not that a submarine, it would already be in an incapacitated state. The fact that there are two compartments flooded is a minimum. The steering mechanisms and their drives are damaged, the shaft is damaged, the propeller is damaged, the hydroelectric system is damaged - and this is the minimum list of damage, and in fact there may be much more," said Oleg Katkov.

A nice bonus

The powerful explosion of the SBU drone damaged not only the hydroelectric equipment of the Varshavyanka, but also other submarines nearby. At least one more, which was standing a few dozen meters away from the explosion site, the expert assured.

"This is very sensitive equipment, and a powerful explosion quite disables it. And this is a nice bonus," he said.

Oleg Katkov added that the Varshavyanka directly received "damage equal to destruction." Indirectly, this is confirmed by the fact that other boats after the explosion were quickly transferred to other ports, while the submerged damaged boat remained in place (which is understandable - it is, to put it mildly, not on the move and not afloat).

"And here begins the main surprise. The place of submarine repair in the Black Sea is the still-occupied Sevastopol. It was there that another similar submarine of the Varshavyanka project, the Rostov-on-Don, was once hit by a missile in a dry dock. And that stricken boat was also not moved somewhere safer. Therefore, in 2024 it was once again, already finally, nailed by the second strike. If after that the Rashists had three "Varshavyanka" in the Black Sea, now there are only two, that is, 50% of the fleet of this class destroyed," - stated the expert.
