The Verkhovna Rada has given a start to the process.
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted in favor of renaming the kopeck a step. The corresponding bill on desovietization of the name of the change coin of Ukraine was supported in the first reading.
About it reports RBC-Ukraine with reference to the broadcast of the parliament session.
What will change
"For" gave their votes 264 people's deputies. The change from kopeck to step will be a symbolic completion of the 1996 monetary reform.
The bill, among the initiators of which is the speaker of the VRU RRU Ruslan Stefanchuk, proposes to change the name of the exchange coin from "kopeka" to the original Ukrainian - "step".
The word "step", as the MPs add, is often found in the works of Shevchenko, Lesya Ukrainka, Kotlyarevsky and other Ukrainian classics.
In 1918, the Central Rada issued change money in denominations of 10-50 steps. They were used in circulation until 1919, after which they were abolished by the Bolsheviks.
"This decision has not only technical, but also symbolic meaning. "Kopeika" is a legacy of the Moscow empire and the Soviet past. But "step" is a historical Ukrainian name, which was used in the times of Hetmanshchina and the Ukrainian People's Republic," the initiators explain.
The changes, as noted in the Rada, will not require additional costs: coins "kopeika" and "step" for some time will be in circulation at the same time, and the ratio will remain 1:1.
What's next
According to the NBU, there are almost 14 billion coins in circulation in Ukraine.
In the future it is planned to issue only coins "50 steps" - for about 3-4 years, in the number of tens of millions of pieces. All other denominations will be from 1 hryvnia and above.
With regard to the bill on renaming "kopeck" to "step", the Verkhovna Rada held a discussion on holding an additional plenary session on December 27. The corresponding proposal was supported by 241 people's deputies.
Thereby, in general, the bill on the renaming of the circulating coin will be considered by the MPs in the second reading next Saturday.
