The Kremlin appreciated the shocking level of incompetence of the US negotiator.
Major New York real estate developer Steve Whitkoff has suddenly become a key international negotiator for the US president, despite his lack of experience in geopolitics. Although it is known that he has long been a close friend of Donald Trump, his rapid political rise, according to The Wall Street Journal, was largely due not to the personal support of the American leader, but to the actions of Vladimir Putin.
According to the publication, after his return to the White House, Trump appointed Whitkoff as his special envoy to the Middle East, given his business experience in Saudi Arabia. To supervise the issues of the Russian-Ukrainian war was initially supposed to Keith Kellogg. However, the situation quickly changed: according to the WSJ, the Kremlin interfered in the process, and it was Whitkoff who began to conduct the main contacts with Russia, while Kellogg's role was reduced to a secondary one.
The newspaper's sources claim that Moscow carefully analyzed the psychological profiles of Trump's entourage and concluded that Kellogg did not suit Russia as a negotiator because of his openly pro-Ukrainian stance. At the same time, Whitkoff was considered a more suitable figure for dialog with Russia.
The WSJ notes that for decades, American officials have received special instructions before visits to Russia - the so-called "Moscow Rules" - designed to reduce the risks of compromise and recruitment by Russian intelligence services. However, Whitkoff, according to the publication, refused to follow these recommendations, including the use of the U.S. State Department's in-house interpreter.
