U.S. Homeland Security Secretary: Maduro Must Go
Nicolás Maduro

Washington is sending a signal to Venezuela's dictator.

The US is intercepting tankers carrying Venezuelan oil for a reason. It's a direct signal to dictator Nicolas Maduro that he must leave power.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem said so, according to Bloomberg.

"We're not just intercepting these ships, we're also sending a message to the world that the illegal activities that Maduro is involved in are unacceptable, he must go, and we will stand up for our people," Noem emphasized.

She added that Maduro is an enemy of the US and the US Coast Guard is doing an outstanding job intercepting tankers and "sending a clear message that the US will stop these shipments."

Bloomberg noted that Noem has taken a tougher stance than other administration officials. In particular, U.S. President Donald Trump has said Maduro's days are numbered, but has refrained from directly confirming that Washington is trying to oust him. He has repeatedly said he would use ground strikes on Venezuelan territory.

Analogously, Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday declined to comment on whether the US is trying to get the Venezuelan president to step down.
