Sir Laurie Bristow has called for Ukraine to be supported with arms.
Former British ambassador to Moscow Sir Laurie Bristow has said that Putin is the main problem for reaching a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, the idea that the Russian leader might agree to end the war in exchange for territorial concessions is a "fantasy," writes The Telegraph (translated by Charter97.org).
"There is no deal in which Putin will be satisfied and walk away having exchanged Ukrainian land," Bristow emphasized. He noted that Putin seeks to assert "great power" rights in his "sphere of influence" in Central and Eastern Europe, which cannot be reconciled with Europe's interests.
The former ambassador urged Western countries to recognize reality and continue arming Ukraine. "We support the supply of arms not to keep the war going but to stop it," he said. According to Bristow, this is a key element in the security of Britain and Europe as a whole.
Sir Laurie also emphasized the lessons from Afghanistan: "Even if we don't want what is happening, we need to be realistic and make decisions based on the situation." He recalled the sacrifices of British soldiers and emphasized the importance of an informed approach to international politics.
The former ambassador noted that Putin's public statements clearly demonstrate an unwillingness to compromise. At the same time, Western leaders must remain resolute and strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities to deter Russian aggression.
Bristow said the key to success in international politics today is an honest assessment of the situation and the courage to act on real threats, not illusions. This provides the basis for future stability and security in Europe, even in the face of the current confrontation.
