Washington is concentrating military forces around Venezuela.
The U.S. moved special operations aircraft, troops and additional equipment to the Caribbean this week, the Wall Street Journal reported this week, citing U.S. officials and flight tracking data. According to the publication, the moves expand Washington's options for potential military action in the region.
The transferred weapons include at least a dozen CV-22 Osprey used by special operations forces and C-17 aircraft, among others. A WSJ source confirmed that the aircraft carried military personnel and armored vehicles.
In early December, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announced the launch of Operation Southern Spear against drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere. On December 17, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a "full and complete" blockade of Venezuela's oil tankers under U.S. sanctions.
Donald Trump said the United States would continue to concentrate military forces around Venezuela until the country's authorities "return to the United States all the oil, land and other assets they previously stole."
