ChNPP Director Warned Of Possible Collapse Of The Protective Dome

The actions of Russians can lead to a state of emergency.

A new strike by Russia could lead to the collapse of the inner protective shelter over the destroyed reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This was stated in an interview with AFP by plant director Sergei Tarakanov.

According to Sergei Tarakanov, it will take at least three to four years to restore the protective functions of the shelter over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant after the damage it has already received earlier. At the same time, he emphasized that a repeated hit by a missile or drone could have critical consequences.

Since the start of the war in February 2022, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been repeatedly hit by Russian shelling. In early 2025, one of these strikes punched a hole in the outer containment, after which the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the facility had lost its basic safety features.

Tarakanov explained that if a missile or drone hits the dome directly or falls nearby - for example, an Iskander ballistic missile - the shock wave could cause a "mini-earthquake." In such a case, he said, no one could guarantee that the inner structure of the shelter would withstand the load.

The destroyed Chernobyl power unit is covered by two protective structures: an inner sarcophagus of steel and concrete, urgently erected after the 1986 accident, and a modern outer shell, the New Safe Confinement (NSC). It was the roof of the NSC that was severely damaged in February 2025 by a Russian drone strike, resulting in a major fire of the outer skin of the metal structure.

"Our New Confinement has lost several key functions. We realize that it will take at least three to four years to restore them," the station director said.
