This is what the negotiations are about.
President Vladimir Zelensky has said that the date of Ukraine's accession to the European Union has been discussed between Ukraine and the United States without confirmation from the European side as of today.
Zelensky said this during a meeting with journalists on Tuesday, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
Vladimir Zelensky was commenting on the seventh point of the draft plan to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, which stipulates that Ukraine will become a member of the EU at a certain specifically defined time and receive short-term privileged access to the European market.
"The accession dates for Ukraine today are a bilateral conversation between America and Ukraine without European confirmation so far. We are talking about the fact that we want to have a specific date for EU membership, that this is the right security guarantee, and in general we feel that America supports this," Zelensky said.
The president explained that Ukraine considers EU membership a mandatory security guarantee, even if it comes into effect in one or more years. "EU membership is also the acquisition of part of our security guarantees, and that is why we want to fix the date - when it will happen. For example, it is 2027 or 2028 - there should be some specifics, because without specifics, a security guarantee does not look like a real security guarantee," Zelensky emphasized.
