Algeria was a colony of France for over a hundred years.
Algeria's parliament unanimously passed a law declaring French colonization a crime, the legislature's press service reported. The document, as reported by Al-Jazeera, states that France bears "legal responsibility for its colonial past in Algeria and the tragedies caused by it."
The coordinator of the National Commission for History and Memory, Mohamed Lahcen Zegedi, called the criminalization of French colonization of Algeria a historical moment. Similarly, the speaker of the Algerian Council of the Nation (the country's upper house of parliament), Azzouz Nasseri, commented on the decision, pointing out that the adoption of the law, "enshrines justice" and "justifies the sacrifices of the Algerian people," who do not accept any encroachment on their sovereignty and inviolable rights.
Before the vote, Parliament Speaker Brahim Bougali said it would send "a clear signal, both at home and abroad, that Algeria's national memory is not to be erased or debated," Al-Jazeera reported. After the law was passed, lawmakers standing in scarves in the colors of the national flag chanted "Long live Algeria!" and applauded the passage of the bill, France24 noted.
Algeria was a colony of France for more than a hundred years, from 1830 to 1962. The country gained its independence from France as a result of the War of National Liberation, which lasted from 1954 to 1962.
