The terrorists were planning attacks on Christians.
Turkish authorities say they have succeeded in thwarting planned attacks on Christmas and New Year's Eve events. More than 100 alleged members of the Islamic State group have been arrested. This is reported by HBC with reference to the Istanbul prosecutor's office.
The large-scale raids took place at 124 addresses across Istanbul. During the searches, law enforcers seized firearms, ammunition and documents of the organization. According to officials, ISIS supporters have been actively planning attacks this week, choosing non-Muslims as their main target.
Police have detained a total of 115 suspects, with another 22 people wanted. Prosecutors said the men had been in contact with ISIS militants outside Turkey.
The operation came just two days after Turkish intelligence conducted a raid against the group on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. There, a Turkish national was detained for allegedly holding a high position in a regional branch of ISIS and planning attacks on civilians.
Turkish intelligence agencies regularly pursue people suspected of having links to terrorists. The country shares a 900-kilometer border with Syria, where ISIL remains active in some areas. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who has close ties with the Turkish government, has already pledged to work with the US and Europe to root out the remnants of ISIS.
