Oligarchs complain about nationalization.
Russian oligarchs at their annual meeting with Vladimir Putin handed him an appeal asking him to intervene in the situation with the mass nationalization of private property. According to businessmen's estimates, factories, plants, ports and companies worth over 4 trillion rubles have already been seized. The head of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Alexander Shokhin told "Kommersant" about it.
He recalled that the business community had already raised this issue in 2023. Then the president said that the problem "should be solved," but there were no concrete solutions. "Now we have handed over the letter again and expect the result. We need a clear formula that will exclude arbitrary interpretations by the courts," Shokhin said.
He said that entrepreneurs insist that violations of intangible rights and freedoms of citizens cannot serve as grounds for nationalization. Shokhin explained that now the easiest mechanism for deprivatization is to invoke the violation of citizens' right to a decent life, which is interpreted as a public interest. As a result, he emphasized, the state gets the opportunity to seize almost any property without compensation, even in the absence of specific statements about the damage caused.
Business representatives also believe that if necessary, the state should buy back assets, rather than forcibly seize them. "If the state needs an object, it can be nationalized, but with the payment of compensation and redemption from the owner," said the head of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
