An Outbreak Of "mouse Fever" Is Sweeping Russia

Thousands of Russians have been infected.

A surge in the incidence of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), also known as "murine" fever, has been recorded in Russia. From January to October 2025, the infection, which is carried by rodents, infected more than 3.3 thousand Russians - 1.5 times more than in the same period a year earlier. This follows from the data of the Kazan Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology (KRIIEM) of Rospotrebnadzor, cited by "Izvestia".

Cases of "mouse fever" have been registered in eight federal districts and 54 subjects of the Russian Federation. A sharp increase in the number of infections is observed in the Far East, the Urals and Central Russia. However, more than 80% of cases are in the Volga region. The KNIIEM explained this by abnormally high temperatures that prevailed in November and December. This caused an infestation of mice in many regions. At the same time, 86% of those who fell ill with "mouse fever" fall on the urban population. The representative of Rospotrebnadzor in the Udmurt Republic Anastasia Sidorova explained it by the fact that people travel to their garden plots and there get infected by rodents.

"Mouse fever" is not transmitted from person to person, and therefore, there can be no epidemic - only outbreaks in certain regions that can be controlled, says the head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology of Pirogov Medical University and the chief infectious disease specialist of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency Vladimir Nikiforov. In this case, the fever is transmitted through food and drinking water contaminated with rodent excretions, recalls Irina Volgina, associate professor of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the State University of Education. Infection also occurs through inhalation of dust containing rodent excrement, while working in basements, cellars and dry cleaning, added infectious disease specialist of JSC "Medicine" Vladimir Neronov.

"Among the symptoms are headache, fever, back pain and signs of kidney damage. The disease is dangerous because the early stages of its manifestation may resemble influenza or other cold infections with a pronounced febrile syndrome," Neronov said. According to him, up to 8% of cases of infection with "mouse fever" end in death.

There is no vaccine against hemorrhagic fever: patients are treated in an infectious hospital, affecting the main symptoms of the disease. "Prevention is based on strict adherence to hygiene. It is necessary to wash hands and food thoroughly, use masks and respirators when working in rooms where mice or rats can live. In addition, protection measures include rodent control," Neronov concluded.
