NATO Asks Ukraine To Share Experience In Destroying Drones

The alliance is looking for affordable ways to shoot down Russian Shaheds.

NATO's military is looking for cheap means of destroying drones to replace expensive missiles. And Ukraine seems to have a solution. This is reported by Business Insider.

It is noted that Ukraine uses interceptor drones to shoot down Russian Shaheds on a daily basis. NATO sees this not only as an opportunity to shoot down enemy targets for cheap, but also as a sign of where the war is headed.

The journalists write that the interceptor drones have emerged this year as a priority investment in Ukraine's defense. As Kiev is looking to get ahead of Russia's buildup in the production of means of defeat. Ukraine produces hundreds of these UAVs every day, some costing as little as $2,500. Whereas a Russian Shahed costs at least $35,000.

The interceptors have greatly expanded Ukraine's air defense capabilities, as they can engage faster targets at higher altitudes than mobile fire teams armed with machine guns can. Seeing this, NATO is trying to develop its own interceptor drones as well. And this trend began to grow in September, when Russian drones violated Polish and Romanian airspace.

These incidents have led NATO to question how the Alliance should counter cheap UAVs and whether it is wise to launch fighter jets armed with expensive missiles to do so.

In addition, Poland and Romania are now deploying the US Merops system, which has already shot down more than 1,900 Russian targets in Ukraine. However, Western countries are also cooperating with Ukraine in this area. In particular, in September, the UK announced plans to mass produce thousands of Ukrainian interceptor drones for Kiev. The United States is also producing these weapons in cooperation with Ukraine.
