Ukraine warns of the threat of a nuclear accident.
The Ukrainian Energy Ministry condemns the illegal "licensing" of the Zaporizhzhya NPP power unit by the Russian Federation. Such actions pose a real threat to nuclear safety and violate international law.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to a statement by the Ukrainian Energy Ministry.
The Ministry of Energy strongly rejects Russia's attempt to legitimize the occupation of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant by issuing a "license" to operate one of its power units.
"Rostechnadzor's decision is legally null and void and has no legal consequences. Zaporizhzhya NPP is under the exclusive jurisdiction of Ukraine, and the only competent nuclear regulatory authority remains the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine," the Energy Ministry said.
"The 'authorization documents' issued by the occupation administration or structures of the Russian Federation grossly violate international law and Ukraine's sovereignty. Such actions contradict UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/78/316, decisions of the IAEA Board of Governors and the agency's nuclear safety principles.
Russia's statements about the readiness of the power unit to operate are particularly dangerous.
"Under the conditions of the loss of the Kakhovka reservoir, shelling, power outages, degradation of safety systems and lack of qualified personnel, any attempts to start the reactors are knowingly irresponsible and may lead to a nuclear accident with transboundary consequences," the Energy Ministry emphasized.
The energy industry also notes that the Russian corporation Rosatom, which has become part of Russia's military infrastructure, has been involved in illegal management.
Ukraine demands the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and personnel, the return of the plant to Ukrainian control and the preservation of the power units in cold shutdown mode.
The statement said that attention should be focused on strengthening international sanctions against Rosatom and Rostekhnadzor officials.
The Ministry of Energy calls on the international community and the IAEA to make a clear assessment of Russia's actions and increase pressure to prevent a nuclear catastrophe.
