A bill has been introduced in Congress.

The U.S. Congress plans to ban the renaming of any federal building, land or other asset in honor of current U.S. President Donald Trump.

This is reported by Newsweek.

The reason for the bill

The reason for initiating the bill was the controversial decision to add Trump's name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, effective Dec. 19 - the date workers began installing the previous name.

The building eventually received a new name, the "Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center," as voted on by the Kennedy Center's Board of Trustees.

The vote to add Trump's name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has raised concerns about historical legacy, congressional authority and what some lawmakers call a scheme to politicize public assets.

This underscores broader questions about the limits of presidential power and the protection of national memory - issues that resonate in American political and cultural life.

After this high-profile renaming, U.S. lawmakers introduced bills to undo the change and prohibit similar actions in the future.

Who sponsored the bills

Democratic Congresswoman April McClain Delaney of Maryland has introduced two bills: the Kennedy Center Protection Act, which would nullify the board's vote and require Trump's name to be removed from all signage, and the Federal Property Integrity Act, which would ban renaming federal assets after sitting presidents.

McClain Delaney called these efforts important to protect the nation's heritage and Congressional control over federal memorials.

"Congress must stop Trump's 'branding' of our national treasures and memorials, especially an institution that elevates our national art and honors the memory of the late President John F. Kennedy. And if that's not clear enough, my second bill would ensure that no other federal monument can ever be named in honor of a sitting president. It is long past time for lawmakers to draw a firm line to prevent such activity," she said.

The congresswoman added that such actions on Trump's part are an insult to the American people.

"The Kennedy Center is a monument to a fallen president. Changing the name of the Kennedy Center is a betrayal of President Kennedy's legacy and an insult to the American people and our shared history," Delaney concluded.

In the meantime, independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced a parallel bill in the Senate, calling Trump's actions "arrogant" and promising a legislative ban on naming federal facilities after sitting presidents.

It is also worth remembering the reaction of the descendants of former U.S. President Kennedy to the renaming of the Center. Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, said the former president "proudly stood for justice, peace, equality, dignity, diversity and compassion for those who suffer."

"President Trump stands against these values and his name should not stand next to President Kennedy's," she added.

The moves follow other high-profile naming efforts by Trump. These include the renaming of the U.S. Institute of Peace and the White House chief of staff's intention to build a "Trump-class" battleship for the Navy - which has led to further scrutiny and legal challenges.

What comes next

The fate of the Kennedy Center name and Trump's campaign to brand federal property rests with Congress and the courts, according to the publication. A lawsuit challenging the renaming has already been filed, and Rep. Beatty, who is in favor of it, argues that any official changes would require congressional action.

If the Kennedy Center Protection Act or the Federal Property Integrity Act are passed, they would not only restore the center's original name, but also set legal boundaries for future naming efforts, potentially limiting similar initiatives by current or future presidents.
