Israel's prime minister will make the announcement after returning from the US.
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu may decide on early elections in the coming days - after his return from the U.S.
This was reported on December 27 by the political correspondent of ITV Channel 12 Daphne Liel. According to her, the key factor will be the outcome of Netanyahu's meeting with US President Donald Trump, Details reported.
The decision will have to do with whether the outcome of the meeting will make possible any major achievements that Netanyahu will be able to "present" to his voters.
At home, the passage of the "draft law" is becoming more problematic.
The fate of the draft law looks increasingly problematic against this backdrop. As Liel notes, the bill's progress has effectively stalled, and the likelihood of its passage has markedly decreased.
If the law, which exempts up to 95% of the ultra-Orthodox from IDF service, is not passed, the ultra-Orthodox parties may fail to pass the state budget in March 2026, leading to the dissolution of the Knesset. It is possible that Netanyahu will play "ahead of the curve" and call early elections himself.
The prime minister had previously hoped to approve the conscription law before his visit to the US. But then, according to Channel 12, he realized that it would not be possible to meet this deadline.
This increases pressure on the coalition and reduces the political "corridor" for decision-making.
In the end, according to Channel 11 and Channel 12, everything will depend on the meeting with Trump. If Netanyahu realizes that some foreign policy or military achievements are possible in the coming year: a large-scale operation against Hizbullah, the disarmament of Hamas in Gaza or a peace agreement with Saudi Arabia - he will try to stay in power until the end of the cadence.
Otherwise, the prime minister is likely to initiate the dissolution of the Knesset and new elections early.
The same was reported today by the American TV channel CNN. According to its reports, the meeting with Trump could be the de facto start of an election campaign for Netanyahu. The election is due in October 2026, but could be held early, CNN noted.
Israeli sources did not rule out in a conversation with CNN that Netanyahu may ask Trump at the meeting to approve another military operation in the Gaza Strip. In return, he may agree to further advance Trump's plan for a ceasefire in the Strip.
According to the network, Netanyahu may offer Trump a "comprehensive deal": a shift to a second phase of the Gaza peace plan (which Trump seeks, as it is essentially his only "achievement" in the foreign policy arena) in return for some sort of action against Lebanon and Iran - as well as support for Netanyahu's own pardon campaign.
"Netanyahu always uses connections. He exchanges advancement on one front for compensation on another. In all likelihood, he will have to hand over the second phase [of the Gaza peace deal] to Trump. So the key question is what he will get in return - for example, U.S. support for another U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear facilities or support for military action in Lebanon," a senior Israeli official told CNN.
