China To Conduct Military Studies To Blockade Taiwan

All branches of the military will be involved.

China will hold a large-scale military exercise "Fair Mission 2025" around Taiwan on Tuesday, December 30. This was announced by the Eastern Military Command of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA), Reuters reported. The maneuvers will involve units from the ground forces, navy, air force and missile forces. "These [exercises] serve as a serious warning to the separatist forces of 'Taiwan independence' and external intervention forces," the PLA said.

The Chinese army is expected to practice "sea and air combat readiness" patrolling, achieving integrated control, blockading key ports and areas, and conducting multi-dimensional deterrence as part of the exercises. A PLA command statement also released a graphic outlining five zones around Taiwan where movement by sea and air will be restricted for 10 hours. The exercise will be the sixth since 2022. The PLA has previously practiced the blockade of Taiwan's ports, but Beijing has not previously called the purpose of the maneuvers "deterring" external military intervention.

The exercise will take place amid rising regional tensions, Reuters recalls. In November, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could become a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan and allow Tokyo to exercise the right to collective self-defense. China responded by threatening Japan with "crushing defeat." Also in December, the U.S. announced an $11.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, the largest military aid package for the republic. It included eight contracts for 82 HIMARS systems and 420 ATACMS missiles, drones and other equipment. Washington emphasized that it made the decision on the supplies for national security reasons.

China considers Taiwan its part and regards any external support for the island's authorities, including visits by foreign delegations, as a violation of Chinese sovereignty. At the same time, Taiwan categorically rejects China's "one country, two systems" model, which Beijing has been promoting since the 1980s.
