Mass Protests Erupted In Tehran

Thousands of people took to the streets amid the collapse of the national currency.

In the Iranian capital, traders and shopkeepers are blocking the streets and protesting. They also closed their shops today and called on Iranians to join the strike, BILD reported.

The main reason for the discontent was the collapse of the Iranian currency. On Dec. 28, the rial fell to a record low of 1.42 per U.S. dollar. Because of inflation, the prices of everyday goods are rising strongly. Food prices have risen by 72% in a year, medicine prices by 50%.

Protesters in their slogans demanded the return of the Shah. According to reports from the ground, parts of Tehran's bazaar have joined the strike.

The regime used tear gas and water cannons against the demonstrators. Deputy Interior Minister Ali Akbar Pourjamshidian, in the best propaganda style, attributed the currency fluctuations to psychological reasons and urged the population to be vigilant, patient and cooperative - they say they should not succumb to the instigation of the enemy. In addition, Iranian authorities said they would prosecute anyone who takes to the streets.

"Whoever ignores these warnings, the competent authorities should be consistently pursued and punished," warned the head of the judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei.
