This is the first known case of an attack on the country's territory.
The United States used a drone to attack a port facility in Venezuela, knowledgeable sources told CNN. The operation was carried out by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and carried out earlier in December, they said. The strike hit a separate dock that U.S. authorities believe the Venezuelan group Tren de Aragua used to store drugs and load them onto ships. No one was at the facility at the time of the attack, so no one was injured in the explosion, CNN's interlocutors said. One of them noted that the strike was largely symbolic, as there are many docks in Venezuela that are used by drug traffickers. However, a significant escalation between Washington and Caracas is possible afterward, the channel's source added.
This is the first known instance of the US attacking a target on Venezuelan territory. The strike was earlier reported by President Donald Trump but did not give details. He said the affected pier was used to load drugs onto maritime vessels. "They have a large structure, a large facility where, you know, ships come out of. Two nights ago we destroyed it, so we hit them very hard," Trump said on WABC radio. Later, answering reporters' questions during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, the White House chief said the U.S. had so far hit Venezuelan boats carrying drugs, but now hit the very area where they were loaded with illegal substances. "That's the supply zone. That's where they organize everything, and now it no longer exists," Trump said. He declined to answer a question about whether that was the only strike by the U.S. against Venezuela.
The U.S. military ramped up its presence in the Caribbean in early fall and has been striking Venezuelan vessels since September. The White House has said the campaign is aimed at drug trafficking. However, Trump also instructed to keep the Venezuelan oil blockade in place for months and detain sanctioned Venezuelan tankers. In addition, Trump announced the closure of the skies over the country and said that President Nicolas Maduro's days are numbered.
