Saudi Arabia has launched airstrikes on the port of Mukalla in southeastern Yemen following reports of arms shipments to separatists. According to local media, the weapons were delivered to Yemen from a United Arab Emirates port.
The Reuters reported this, citing regional sources.
A spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition said two ships entered the port of Mukalla, located in Hadramawt province, without proper authorization. He said the ships disabled tracking systems and unloaded a large shipment of weapons and military equipment. In response, coalition aviation struck the cargoes, which were completely destroyed. It is noted that there are no civilian casualties.
Saudi Arabia earlier warned separatist formations against fighting in the eastern provinces of Hadramawt and al-Mahra.
In addition, Riyadh said that any threat to the country's national security is a "red line". Saudi authorities also called on the United Arab Emirates to withdraw its troops from Yemen within 24 hours and stop supporting the separatists.
Yemen has been in a state of civil war since 2014. During this time, government forces, separatist groups and the Houthi movement have been fighting for control of the country. In March 2015, Saudi Arabia led a coalition of nine African and Middle Eastern states to intervene in the conflict to influence its outcome.
