Foreign Affairs: Russians Are Tired Of War

However, they are afraid to say so.

The war with Ukraine led not only to changes on the front, but also to a profound transformation of everyday life in Russia. Under the slogans of "traditional values," the authorities have increased pressure on culture, education, and the private lives of citizens. Books, plays and even museum exhibits are banned if they do not conform to the new ideological line, according to the magazine Foreign Affairs (translated by Charter97.org).

Mentions of such banned topics are disappearing from public space, and publishers and theaters are forced to either self-censor or find ironic ways to circumvent the bans. At the same time, the number of absurd restrictions is growing - from claims about children's toys to attempts to "cancel" foreign classics.

An important feature of the new reality is the revival of the culture of denunciation. Thousands of Russians report "disloyal" neighbors, colleagues or public figures to the authorities. Sometimes denunciations become mass and become a way to demonstrate loyalty to the state or to protect oneself from suspicion.

The Internet has also come under tight control. Slowing down or blocking messengers, fines for searching for banned sites and regular disconnections of mobile communications have become commonplace. All this increases the feeling of instability and isolation.

Despite the external absurdity of what is happening, the system works effectively, accustoming people to silence and caution. However, even in these conditions, Russians continue to look for ways to preserve personal freedom - albeit in hints, symbols and half-whispers.
