Cyprus: Ukraine Will Be A Priority Of The EU Council Presidency

Europe is firmly on Kiev's side.

Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulidis has assured that Ukraine will be a top priority during Cyprus' presidency of the Council of the European Union. This period will begin in January 2026, when the role of rotating EU Council Presidency will pass to Cyprus from Denmark. Christodoulidis visited Kiev on Thursday, December 4, where he met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, DW reports.

"Europe is firmly on Ukraine's side. And Ukraine will be the main priority of the Cypriot presidency (during the presidency of the Council of the EU. - Ed.)," the Cypriot president said on social media after a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart.

Christodoulidis emphasized that Cyprus "understands from its own experience the devastating consequences of invasion and occupation," referring to the invasion of the island by Turkish troops in the 1970s and their seizure of the northern part of Cyprus.

"I discussed with President Zelensky the latest developments in Ukraine and our roadmap for progress in Ukraine's accession negotiations (to the EU. - Ed.) and the opening of negotiating chapters during the Cypriot presidency," the president added.

At the press conference, Christodoulidis assured Zelensky that the government and people of Cyprus not only stand in solidarity with and support Ukraine, but also understand perfectly "what it is to overcome the road to EU membership."

Ukrainian President Zelensky, for his part, expressed gratitude to Cyprus for its support. "This applies in particular to the negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the European Union. We expect that the coming months will give more progress for Ukraine's path to the EU, and the Cypriot presidency could be historic in terms of opening negotiating chapters for Ukraine and other necessary decisions," Zelensky explained, as quoted by the press service of the Office of the President.

He also pointed out the importance of the fact that Christodoulidis' visit comes ahead of the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU: "We take today's visit both as a sign of support for Ukraine and as a sign of our further joint readiness to work together We count on Cyprus to support joint European decisions regarding Russian assets," Zelensky expressed hope.
