The shooting came two days after the conclusion of a new round of peace talks.
Pakistani and Afghan officials said that amid heightened tensions after another collapse of peace talks earlier in the week, the countries exchanged heavy fire along the border late in the evening, Dec. 5. As Reuters writes, no casualties have been reported yet.
A spokesman for the radical Islamic Taliban movement Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistani troops had attacked the Spin Boldak district in Kandahar province. In turn, a spokesman for Pakistan's prime minister accused Afghan forces of "unjustified firing" along the border in Chaman.
"Pakistan is ready for any action and is committed to protecting its territory and the safety of its citizens," said spokesman Mosharaf Zaidi.
As Reuters notes, the firing came two days after a new round of peace talks between the South Asian neighbors ended without a breakthrough. Both sides, meanwhile, agreed to maintain a fragile truce.
The talks in Saudi Arabia last week were the latest in a series of meetings organized by Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Which aim to reduce tensions after deadly border clashes in October.
According to the news outlet, the basis of the dispute is Islamabad's claim that militants from Afghanistan have carried out recent attacks inside Pakistan, including suicide bombings involving Afghan citizens. Kabul denies the allegations, saying it is not responsible for security inside Pakistan.
