Bloomberg: Starmer Will Host Zelensky In London Today At A Crucial Moment In Ukraine Talks

Macron and Mertz will join.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in London on Monday, December 8, at a key moment in peace talks to end Russia's war against Ukraine.

Starmer and other European leaders are seeking to work out a solution to protect Ukraine from possible Russian aggression in the future, writes Bloomberg.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will also join the Downing Street talks. At the same time, British Foreign Secretary Ivette Cooper will travel to Washington to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other U.S. officials.

The talks will take place amid European fears of a breakup of the transatlantic alliance after the United States last month proposed a 28-point peace plan drawn up jointly with Russia.

"The principle of the talks is for Ukraine to be able to determine its own future," Bloomberg quoted British Cabinet Secretary Pat McFadden as commenting.

He added that "this really is a watershed moment."

"Everyone wants the war to end, but they want it to end in such a way that Ukraine has the freedom to choose its future," McFadden pointed out.

The minister said that means a just end to the war and security guarantees, not "a toothless organization that is incapable of determining its own future."

Ukraine's European allies hope that if they succeed in supporting Kiev during the winter months, Russia's economic problems will worsen next year and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will lose leverage at the negotiating table, Bloomberg noted.
