The actions took place in several cities.

Thousands of Syrians in several German cities staged celebratory rallies on Sunday, December 7 - the eve of the anniversary of the overthrow by rebels in Syria of the dictatorial regime of the country's former ruler Bashar al-Assad.

About 10,000 Syrians took part in the celebrations in the city, located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, according to the social and legal media company WDR, citing Essen police. From noon, they began gathering near the central station. People were waving Syrian flags, those who arrived in cars honked.

In the afternoon, the traffic was temporarily disrupted due to the mass of people on the roadway in the city center. Police cordoned off the area where the rally was held. In general, however, the event was peaceful, although police recorded several cases of burning pyrotechnics and "demonstration of a forbidden flag."

In Berlin, according to the social and legal media company rbb, about 3,000 people took part in the street festivities, although only 300 were announced, according to police. They marched from Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate. The rally was peaceful, the report said.

In the city of Halle in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, hundreds of Syrians joined the celebration of the anniversary of the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the online publication Du bist Halle said.

According to participants and organizers of the rallies in each of these cities, many Syrians who fled to Germany during the civil war in their homeland will be ready to return there as soon as living conditions there improve.

According to data from the central register of foreigners cited by the online publication Nordkurier, there were about 948,000 Syrian nationals in Germany at the end of September 2025. This is a three percent decrease from the end of 2024. As the publication notes, there could be several reasons why the number of Syrians registered in the FRG has decreased. "Part has obtained German citizenship. In 2023 and 2024, 75,500 and 83,200 Syrians received German citizenship respectively. Syrians thus make up the largest group of foreigners who have obtained German citizenship," the publication said.

When it comes to returning home, 21,800 Syrians left Germany between January and September this year, according to the Federal Statistical Office. To which countries they moved, however, the statistics do not specify.
