Defence Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz has revealed the details.

Poland is now actively working to adapt civilian airports to military needs. In particular, negotiations are underway to modernise airports for defence purposes.

This was reported by Polskie radio.

Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said that the country should expand the network of dual-use airports, which can be used for both civilian and military needs.

‘Every airport should be adapted and in a certain way adjusted to be able to co-operate, to work with the military,’ he stressed.

‘Poland already has aerodromes that fulfil both functions. For example, Kraków-Balice International Airport, where the military air base is located, or part of the Friederik Chopin Airport in Warsaw, which is also used by the military,’ Kosiniak-Kamysz added.

For his part, Deputy Infrastructure Minister Maciej Lasek confirmed that the government is negotiating to extend this practice to 15 civilian airports. He explained that the military part of the airports could house transport hubs, evacuation points, relief centres or cargo hubs.

When asked about the timeline for the availability of this infrastructure, he said that ‘it is already happening.’
