Poland Installs Electronic Protection On Water Sections Of Border With Belarus

The number of cameras exceeds 1.3 thousand.

Polish border guards are close to completing the electronic fence on the water sections of the Polish-Belarusian border, which was announced back in 2022. The installation has been completed and the communication lines are being checked.

This was reported by the representative of the Polish Border Guard Service Andrzej Juzwiak in comments to TVN24.

‘All subsystems, power connections and fibre-optic communication lines are fully ready. More than 500 camera supports have been installed, and the number of cameras itself exceeds 1.3 thousand,’ Juzwiak said.

The length of the river border sections in the Podlaskie Voivodeship (on the border with Belarus) reaches about 47 kilometres, and until this year they were not protected in the same way as the land parts of the borders. Since 2022, concrete and metal fences with a total length of 186 km and a height of 5.5 metres with barbed wire have been built there. The electronic barrier on the land sections of the border, which includes modern control systems such as night vision cameras, thermal imaging cameras and tens of kilometres of cables to detect illegal crossings, was completed in 2023.

The water sections are now also protected, with installation beginning at the end of February 2024. The project to protect the water sections of the border cost more than 85 million zlotys (about $20.8 million).
