Israel Withdraws From UN Human Rights Council

Following the U.S.

Israel withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) on 5 February. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced this, The Jerusalem Post reported.

‘[The Council] has traditionally protected human rights violators, allowing them to escape close attention, and instead obsessively demonises the only democracy in the Middle East - Israel,’ Saar said on X.

He said ‘this body has focused on attacking a democratic country and promoting anti-Semitism instead of promoting human rights.’

‘The discrimination against us is clear: in the UNHRC, Israel is the only country with the agenda devoted exclusively to it,’ the minister continued. He noted that the body has adopted more than 100 resolutions condemning Israel, which is more than 20 per cent of the total number ever adopted by the council. This is more than were adopted against Iran, Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela combined, the foreign minister added.

The day before, US President Donald Trump also withdrew his country from the UN Human Rights Council. Sa'ar welcomed the decision on behalf of Israel and said his country would ‘no longer tolerate’ discrimination.

Trump signed the executive order withdrawing the country from the UN Human Rights Council on the day he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The latter has repeatedly criticised the UNHRC in the past, including for its ‘blatant anti-Israel obsession’.

Trump's executive order states that although the US co-founded the United Nations to avoid global conflicts after World War II, ‘some UN agencies and bodies have strayed from that mission and instead act against the interests of the United States by attacking our allies and promoting anti-Semitism.’

In the same executive order, Trump also banned funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which Israeli authorities accuse of aiding the Palestinian Hamas group. Israel is at war with it in the Gaza Strip.
