Russia did not hesitate to move its nuclear weapons to Belarus.

Polish President Andrzej Duda has called on the United States to move US nuclear warheads stored in Western Europe or the US to Poland as a deterrent against future Russian aggression.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Duda said he had recently discussed the proposal with Keith Kellogg, the US special envoy for Ukraine.

‘NATO's borders moved east in 1999, so 26 years later NATO's infrastructure should also be moved east. To me, that's obvious. I think it's not just that the time is right, but that it would be safer if these weapons were already here,’ he said.

As the FT notes, Poland's communist regime previously deployed Soviet nuclear warheads during the Cold War. At the same time, storing such weapons near Russia's borders - this time under US control - would be seen as a serious threat by the Kremlin.

Duda said US President Donald Trump should decide for himself where to place US nuclear weapons, but we reminded that Russia had moved tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus.

‘Russia did not even hesitate to move its nuclear weapons to Belarus,’ Duda said. ‘They didn't ask anyone's permission.’

Duda also repeated Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's remarks that the country could alternatively have received a better defence from President Emmanuel Macron's idea to extend France's nuclear umbrella to European allies.
