Kyiv should be in the strongest possible position in negotiations.
There is a possibility that a 30-day ceasefire will be reached between Ukraine and Russia. If this happens, the European Union does not intend to suspend arms supplies to Kyiv.
This is reported by Deutsche Welle.
At a briefing in Brussels, a European diplomat emphasized that the EU is seeking to ensure that Ukraine has a stronger position in peace negotiations.
“The European Union is seeking to ensure that Ukraine is in the strongest possible position in peace negotiations, and can also abandon a ‘bad’ deal, as Trump would say, and choose the most suitable moment for negotiations. I do not think that the European Union and its members will stop supplying weapons to Kyiv if the aggressor demands this as a condition for a ceasefire,” he said.
Another diplomat also expressed the opinion that during a potential ceasefire, Ukraine should be armed, and not the other way around.
“The fighting is still going on, but even if there is a pause, Ukraine should be made a "steel porcupine,” the third EU diplomat emphasized.
He also added that it is extremely important to put Ukraine in a strong position in the negotiations. In addition, it is necessary to prevent the Russians from using the “second chance” to regroup and attack again.
The fourth diplomat expressed a similar position. According to him, the EU should not weaken its support for our country in the event of a ceasefire. The task of the allies is to create a strong position for Ukraine, so that the country can improve its defensive capabilities.
“The idea is that, being in a strong position, Ukraine improves its defensive capabilities and can continue to deter in the event of a resumption of hostilities,” the diplomat said.
DW added that on Monday, March 17, the EU foreign ministers will discuss the situation around the ceasefire discussion in Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha will also participate via video link.
