In the coming weeks, the radio will operate using its savings.
On Saturday, March 15, the grant funding for the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) network was cut. This decision followed an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, which mandated cuts to seven federal agencies.
This was reported by Suspilne with reference to a statement from Stephen Capus, the president and CEO of RFE/RL.
He emphasized that terminating the grant agreement would be a huge gift to the enemies of the United States.
"Termination of the grant agreement for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty would be a huge gift to America's enemies. Iranian ayatollahs, Chinese communist leaders, and autocrats in Moscow and Minsk will celebrate the closure of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty after 75 years. Our adversaries' victory would make them stronger and America weaker," Capus stated.
He also informed that throughout its operation, RFE/RL had received bipartisan support in the U.S.
"Without us, nearly 50 million people in closed societies, who rely on us weekly for truthful news and information, will not have access to the truth about America and the world," he emphasized.
Additionally, Suspilne, citing its own source, added that in the coming weeks, Radio Free Europe will operate using its savings.
It was also reported that Voice of America employees have started being sent on administrative leave, as a result of Trump’s cuts to the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees both Radio Free Europe and Voice of America.
