New details of the strike in Saratov region of the Russian Federation.
On the night of 20 March, Engels was subjected to the most massive attack of Ukrainian drones since the beginning of the war, said Saratov Region Governor Roman Busargin. According to him, after the drone raid, a fire started at the Engels-2 military airfield, where strategic aviation, particularly Tu-95MS and Tu-160, is based. ‘For safety reasons, due to the fire on the territory of the aerodrome, evacuation of those living on the territory of the gardening non-commercial partnerships close to the facility is being carried out. All operational services are on site,' Busargin wrote on his Telegram channel.
As Astra writes, heavy smoke rising above the airfield can be seen from the ‘3rd Pilot Town’ micro-district, which is 10 km away from the military facility. According to Mash and Engels Online, Ukrainian drones also attacked an oil depot in Engels. After the debris fell, a fire broke out on it. This may be the base of the Krystal Combine, which stores fuel for strategic bombers. In addition, the drone attack damaged about 30 private and summer houses in the town, as well as Engels City Clinical Hospital No. 1, two kindergartens and a school, Busargin specified. Two people were injured and are being treated. The town authorities have decided to hold all classes in schools remotely.
According to the Defence Ministry's summary, last night the air defence forces shot down 132 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory. Of these, 54 were in Saratov region. Drones were also shot down in Voronezh region (40 drones), Belgorod region (22), Rostov region (nine), Kursk region (three) and Lipetsk region (one). Also, three drones were shot down over annexed Crimea. Rosaviatsia said it imposed restrictions on the work of airports in Saratov and Samara overnight.
Before that, Ukraine had repeatedly carried out drone strikes at the Engels airbase, from which Russian bombers take off to attack targets on Ukrainian territory. Since the beginning of 2025, drones have targeted the base at least three times - on 9 and 14 January, as well as on 11 February.
