Zelensky Speaks Out Against Ending War Along Current Contact Line
VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY

The President of Ukraine has reminded Trump about the ‘Berlin wall’.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken out in a conversation with US President Donald Trump against ending the war along the current contact line between the Ukrainian and Russian armies. ‘There are regions, there are cities, there are towns that are cut by this or that contact line. And if you leave that line in some places, you will just leave places or towns without life. No one is going to come back to a half of the town,’ Zelensky said. According to him, if this happens to big cities, ‘it will be Berlin.’

‘I said honestly to President Trump, ‘Do we want Berlin, do we want a lot of cities like that?’ noted Zelensky. He emphasised that ‘the Berlin wall is not an option’ for Kyiv. At the same time, the Ukrainian President called the issue of territories ‘the most difficult’ in the course of conflict resolution. ‘We will defend Ukraine as much as possible in these issues. But it will be very difficult for us,’ the Ukrainian leader said. At the same time, he said, Trump understands - legally Kyiv will never recognise the occupied territories as Russian.

Zelensky also noted that there are states that are ready to deploy their military contingent in Ukraine. ‘There are those who are ready to be at the border, in dangerous places, those who are ready to be on the sea or in the central cities only. We must work out a common vision, specific countries with quantitative composition should appear on the map,’ the Ukrainian President explained.

In addition, he said that he discussed with Trump the possibility of transferring the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control, to the United States. According to him, Kyiv is ready to take such a step if Washington invests in the modernisation of the plant and provides it with technical staff. Zelensky's phone conversation with Trump took place on 19 March, a day after the US president spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
