CNN: Trump Changes Stance On Zelensky

The American leader unexpectedly expressed optimism about his phone conversation with the Ukrainian president.

U.S. President Donald Trump appears to have softened his harsh stance toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky This may be due to the "more flattering tone" of the Ukrainian leader, CNN reports.

During a one-hour phone call on March 19, Trump agreed to help find critically needed air defense equipment for Ukraine in Europe. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated that the U.S. would continue providing Ukraine with military assistance and intelligence data.

This is significant because Trump had previously halted such aid to pressure Kyiv into discussing his 30-day ceasefire plan. It is also a rare rebuke of Putin, who had made the termination of U.S. military and intelligence support for Ukraine a condition for engaging in the peace process.

"Just finished a very good phone call with Ukrainian President Zelensky. It lasted about one hour. A significant part of the discussion was based on yesterday’s call with President Putin to align Russia and Ukraine in terms of their requests and needs. We are making great progress," Trump wrote yesterday on Truth Social.

At the same time, the outlet noted that Trump's positive assessment of the conversation was "almost absurdly optimistic." However, it is an improvement compared to a few weeks ago when he referred to Zelensky as a "dictator."

"After his calls with Putin and Zelensky, Trump’s dream of a peace deal seems more distant than ever. And yet, if all the drama of this week somehow marks the beginning of a real push toward a fair and lasting settlement, Trump will prove his doubters wrong," the publication concluded.
