Expert: Russia’s ‘Non-Renewable Resource’ May Have Been Destroyed At The Engels Airbase

It was usually stationed at this airbase.

On March 20, drones attacked the city of Engels in Russia. According to media reports, a strike hit a warehouse at the enemy's military airbase, Engels-2. Anatoliy Khrapchinsky, deputy general director of a company specializing in electronic warfare systems and an aviation expert, assessed the likely consequences of the strike in a comment to Espreso.

According to him, unlike strategic aviation, Russia is still capable of producing tactical aircraft. Engels-2 is the only airbase where most of the strategic missiles used to strike Ukraine are stored. These include Kh-101 and Kh-555 missiles. Additionally, this is where aircraft are equipped before returning to the Olenya airbase, from where they take off for combat missions.

"First, there are weapon depots; second, there are fuel and lubricant storage facilities, as the airbase has a sufficient number of reservoirs supplying fuel for Russian strategic bombers," the expert noted.

He emphasized that satellite images are needed to confirm the exact targets hit.

Khrapchinsky added that eliminating several strategic aviation aircraft from Russia would be beneficial since they are a "non-renewable resource." This also applies to aircraft stationed at the Dyagilevo airbase, which Ukraine is capable of reaching with Neptune missiles.

"When it comes to strategic Tu-95 bombers, these are outdated aircraft that are no longer worth restoring. There are also Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 bombers, but Russia cannot manufacture these aircraft—it can only repair them," he explained.

The expert clarified that this is due to the loss or theft of part of the documentation after the collapse of the USSR. Even the factory in Kazan was completely destroyed, forcing Russia to "rebuild it from scratch." The goal was to at least regain the ability to repair these aircraft.
