It lost control and was off the coast of the island of Rügen.

Germany has confiscated the Russian ‘shadow navy’ tanker of Eventin, which runs under the Panamanian flag. He lost control and since mid-January was off the coast of the island of Rügen. As a result of the General Customs Administration's decision, both the obsolete tanker itself and about 100,000 tonnes of crude oil worth more than €40 million are transferred to German ownership.

This is reported by Der Spiegel. According to the publication, Eventin will be re-registered under a different flag.

The vessel was travelling from the Russian port of Ust-Luga through the Baltic to Egypt. After the Eventin lost control in January, it was towed to the waters of the city of Sassnitz, where the Eventin was guarded around the clock by the coast guard and federal police. Since the end of February, the vessel has been officially listed by the EU as part of the Russian shadow fleet.

Now the authorities are developing a plan to pump the oil safely from the Eventin and are deciding what to do with the vessel itself. The authorities of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern want to get rid of the tanker as soon as possible, fearing negative consequences for the environment and tourism. The Ministry of Finance, which is responsible for customs matters, declined to comment on the situation, citing ‘ongoing customs procedures and the complex political situation’.
