Ukrainian Armed Forces Outsmarted Russian KABs

Russian army bombs are being shot down with new jammers.

Suddenly, bombs stopped hitting their targets and started exploding on Russian territory. It's all about the Night Watch Lima jammer, which replaces satellite control signals, security experts say.

The Ukrainian military has learned to counteract Russian guided bombs thanks to the new Night Watch Lima jammer. A Ukrainian security expert told the German tabloid Bild about this.

In the last few weeks, the situation with the constant threat of bombs has begun to change — suddenly they stopped hitting their targets and are falling in other places, including Russian territory.

The publication's source notes that Russian troops use the Kometa-M system in their glide bombs, which combines several antennas for better protection against possible interference. It turns out that the system uses several satellite systems in parallel, and the arrangement of the antennas ensures reception primarily upwards to the satellite.

The Kometa-M system is considered resistant to interference

The jammer suppresses or replaces satellite signals, which causes aerial bombs to lose their orientation in space. The Kometa-M system is resistant to most standard interference.

Night Watch Lima can transmit a false positioning signal, which means that the bomb “does not know” where it really is. Ukrainian specialists use a software error in the Kometa-M receiver to knock bombs off their targets, the expert explains.

“This has little to do with GPS encryption. The Ukrainian Armed Forces conduct electronic warfare at a fairly high level. So far, the Russians are completely powerless against this technology,” the expert commented.

German military analyst Thomas Theiner believes that electronic suppression of Russian gliding aerial bombs gives the Ukrainians an advantage at the front.

“Using electronic warfare, the Ukrainians temporarily stopped the Russian offensive. Now the Ukrainian Armed Forces can counterattack, since the Russians no longer have the protection of gliding aerial bombs. This should not be underestimated,” said Theiner.

However, experts believe that the Russians will soon find ways to circumvent the jamming. They can use more upward-facing antennas, correct software errors in the receiver, and use alternative navigation methods, he notes.

An equally important problem, according to Theiner, is the fiber-optic drones that the Russian military currently uses. They cannot be stopped by electronic warfare.
